Arsenal have decided to exercise their option to extend the contract of Egyptian midfielder Mohammed Elneny.
That is despite him suffering a serious knee injury that will potentially keep him out for the rest of the season, news which was disclosed by the club in the flurry of news surrounding transfer deadline day.
With Elneny out of contract in the summer, that potentially meant that he could have played his last game for the club when he scored in the FA Cup tie away at Oxford.
He incurred the injury shortly afterwards in training, and has since had surgery.
However, the new contract he signed at the end of last season included an option to extend it by a further year, and the club have now indicated they will exercise this.
It is partly this injury which prompted the club to pursue a transfer deadline day for Jorginho, who has joined the club from Chelsea.
