Chelsea have tabled a bid worth up to £115 million for World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez.
The 21 year old midfielder, currently playing for Benfica in the Primeira Liga, was one of the stars of Argentina’s World Cup winning campaign, and his contribution was recognised when he was named Young Player of the Tournament.
His performances in Qatar have caught the attention of the top clubs across Europe, and Chelsea are the first to make a move with Graham Potter keen to lower the age profile of his squad.
They are hoping to sign him when the January transfer window opens, but Benfica have not given up on convince him to remain with them, especially as they are still involved in the Champions League.
If the bid were to be accepted it would smash Chelsea’s existing transfer record fee, the previous benchmark being the £97.5 million they paid Inter Milan for Romelu Lukaku in the summer of 2021.
