The 31 year old, who has been forced to miss the World Cup due to a hamstring injury, has yet to agree a new deal with Chelsea, who normally only give short-term contracts to players over the age of 30.
Arsenal are also being linked with him, although his age profile does not match Mikel Arteta’s young squad, and they have a poor history of signing ageing Chelsea players – William, David Luiz and Petr Cech are three recent examples.

Andy is an exiled English football fan living in Cyprus. He loves all sports but football is his abiding passion, and he still has dreams every now and then about scoring the winning goal in a Wembley Cup Final, even though his playing days are long gone. He follows most major leagues, across Europe at least, and has a favoured team in each. When he’s not watching, listening, reading or downloading podcasts about football, he spend his time worrying about his beloved Arsenal.
