Arsenal are still interested in signing Aston Villa midfielder David Luiz.
They made three attempts to sign the Brazilian on transfer deadline day, but all of them were rejected by the Midlands club, even though Luiz had less than a year left on his current contract.
However, they are expected to return for him in January, with a lower bid because of his contractual situation.
Villa will then have a choice to make. Accept a bid from Arsenal – or another club – or allow him to walk away for free at the end of the season.
The Gunners need a back-up for Thomas Partey who has proved to be injury prone since arriving at the Emirates, and was sent home from international duty with Ghana with a knee problem.
