Chelsea in talks over new Mendy contract

Chelsea are in talks with goalkeeper Édouard Mendy about a new contract with the club.

The Senegalese international has become a permanent fixture at Stamford Bridge, so much so that they are prepared to allow second choice Kepa Arrizabalaga, the most expensive goalkeeper in the world when he signed from Athletic Bilbao in 2018 to leave on loan, and there is no intention to sign a top-class replacement. Gabriel Slolina has been signed from Chicago Fire, but, at just 18 years of age, he is seen as one for the future, and he has been allowed to return to the MLS side on loan to continue his development.

Mendy still has three years left on his current deal, but it isa sign of faith in him that they now want to tie him down to an improved contract.

However, there is no agreement in place yet, because there is still a gap between the parties when it comes to financial terms.
