Currently the manager of English Premier League side Arsenal FC, Arteta was a former assistant coach to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. A winner of the prestigious domestic FA Cup competition both as a player and manager at the Gunners, we take a look at some of the top quotes about Mikel Arteta.
A competent midfielder and winger with over a 100 league games each for both Everton and Arsenal, Arteta was surprisingly never picked for the senior Spanish national team.
Starting out at an amateur youth team, Arteta was involved with the reserve and youth teams of FC Barcelona and played a few matches on loan for French side Paris Saint-Germain before signing up with Scottish Premiership side Rangers in 2002.
He was successful in his debut season, winning both the League and Cup titles, and scoring in the Old Firm derby versus Celtic together with a vital goal on the final day of the season.
He linked up with his childhood team Real Sociedad in the hope of playing with good friend Xabi Alonso, but after an unsuccessful spell moved to Goodison Park and Everton in 2005. Twice voted the club’s player of the season, he then attracted the attentions of Arsenal in 2011.
With two FA Cup triumphs in five seasons, Arteta captained the team for a while, and returned to the club three years after retiring from the field of play to become the new head coach in 2019.
One remarkable fact was that he never played in a full international game for Spain during his 18-year career.
“He is very comfortable on the ball and he has an excellent touch – and the great thing is his best years are still ahead of him…..the need to bring top quality players to Ibrox, and I think Mikel comes into that category.”
Alex McLeish (Rangers manager)
“He’s one of the leaders in the club because he’s the captain of the team…..his experience, his desire and his quality…..”
“Arteta’s role today was a different class…..It was quality midfield play and at times people like him in that system never get the plaudits they deserve.”
“He was brilliant not only because of his talent but his maturity on the pitch…..His knowledge about football surprised me. He was a young player who had a capacity to talk at the same level as a 30-year-old player…..For me, he’s going to be one of the best coaches when he decides to be a coach. He has the capacity to be one of the greatest, for sure. He’s a top personality and character.”
Mauricio Pochettino (former Tottenham Hotspur manager)
“He’s always right. He’s a very good person, and a great coach…..He’s always there for me.”
Leroy Sane (Manchester City player)
“We met several top-class candidates and Mikel stood out to every single one of us as the perfect person for us.”
Raul Sanllehi (Arsenal FC head of football)
“I think he’s a manager who is going to be among the best in the world in the future…..”
Dani Ceballos (Arsenal player)
“He has always had the right temperament…..He is always ready for anything and is a great professional.”
Tim Cahill (Everton player)
“Mikel is an excellent young player, and I’m sure he is someone who will really excite the Rangers fans…..he is a prime example of the talent on show in Spain every week.”
“He’s very influential and he’s one of the leaders of the team and is a technical leader as well.”
“…..Mikel Arteta is spoken of so highly in the media. It’s a fair assessment…..I really like Arteta at Arsenal. I like what he’s trying to do there, I like what he stands for.”
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink
“I’m a big fan of Mikel Arteta…..”
“He’s decided that he’s going to be strong, which you have to admire; I certainly admire him for that.”
Sam Allardyce (former manager)
