The receiver of the honorary MBE last year due to his services to football and his charitable work during the coronavirus pandemic, Henderson is now rated as one of the premier midfield players for both Liverpool FC and the England national football team. With over 300 league games already completed for the Merseyside club, we take a look at some of the best quotes on Jordan Henderson.
As the captain of Liverpool, he has led the side to a Champions League, Premier League, and an FA Cup triumph, as well as numerous other memorable performances worldwide.
Starting out at Sunderland AFC, Henderson came to Anfield in 2011, and four years later, with the departure of Steven Gerrard, was made the club captain at the age of 25. After becoming the sixth Liverpool captain to lift the main European Cup trophy in 2019, he then led the side to attain three continental trophies in under a year; the first English team to do so.
His efforts during the successful league campaign in 2019/20 saw him being named the Football Writers’ Footballer of the Year. He recently became the first Liverpool skipper to win six different trophies, and also broke into the top 30 for appearances made by a club player.
Henderson’s representation of the England team in the international games has also acquired many benefits for the national side with a semi-final appearance in both the 2018 World Cup and the 2019 Nations League, and a runners-up spot in the 2020 European Championship.
“Jordan is the perfect role model…..he’s happy to go under the radar and just go about his job. And he does everything for the team rather than himself.”
Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool team-mate)
“He wants to learn all the time, he works hard, he’s conscientious, he’s a manager’s dream.”
“He is exceptional; he is outstanding…..the quality of Jordan Henderson…..is he unbelievably important to us? Yes.”
“At 29, he has grown into a complete midfielder, and is a fantastic example of someone making the absolute maximum out of their ability.Henderson’s reliability is one of the things that makes him stand out – he is an extremely consistent performer.”
Danny Murphy (former Liverpool midfielder)
“…..best midfielder in the world in his position”
Jorge Jesus (Flamengo football club manager)
“He could play centre back…..And that makes it even more special. He is an 8 transformed into a 6 transformed into a 4. He can play all these positions…..His physical skills are obvious but it shows just how football smart he is because they are completely different positions.”
“We both know there are players who are “at it” every day. I appreciated Jordan’s power and fitness by training with him…..Some players play for themselves: Jordan does the dirty running, grappling for second balls…..Teams can’t function at Liverpool’s level without a cog like Jordan Henderson. He’s obviously going to be a Premier League winner. I look at him and think: good for you.”
Steven Gerrard (former Liverpool team-mate)
“Jordan is such an important player for this team…..The contribution he makes goes unnoticed sometimes…..He’s our captain and he always leads by example.”
Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool team-mate)
“He always had good potential…..he always had a good attitude…..His attitude was always very good and he always wanted to improve and get better…..”
Ged McNamee (Sunderland youth academy manager)
“He has got all the skills technically that we needed…..He’s good with the ball, he’s creative, he’s got good passing, he’s physically very good. That’s everything we wanted in a midfielder and he’s versatile as well.”
Damien Comolli (Liverpool director of football)
“You cannot speak highly enough of Jordan. He’s a fantastic guy around the place…..he navigates from Monday to Friday through the training, setting those standards and those levels.”
Gary McAllister (Liverpool coach)
“We’ve been singing his praises…..I’ve watched Liverpool a lot and he goes under the radar a lot. He’s that link, that little glue to everything…..also his passing over the past two years has got so much better.”
Lee Dixon (former Arsenal defender)
“Someone who’s just made himself a really good player. Someone who works and works and works at his game. Someone you want with you in the trenches.”
Graeme Souness (former Liverpool player)
“(Henderson) has evolved his game, he’s matured…..He wants to learn all the time, he works hard, he’s conscientious, he’s a manager’s dream…..”
“His passing range now is fantastic…..He’s always there for the team…..he’s always been a great lad and a great team-mate…..Every bit of praise he gets he deserves it because it’s true.”
“I have been pretty vocal for quite a long time about his qualities and contribution for club and country – he was arguably Liverpool’s best player in the second half of last season and he has carried on in the same vein in the current campaign. For me, he is now the first choice in his position for the Reds and for England…..”
“Centre-half is one of the positions he can definitely play and thankfully for us he can play that. What makes it so exciting with Hendo is that with his football skills he can be very influential in our build-up as well, so that helps.”
“He just had a great drive and a mental toughness that has been evident while he has progress and where he is now at Liverpool…..his mental strength got him through…..now he is a top player for England and Liverpool captain……A lot of that has come from the drive and determination that Jordan had and we use him as a massive role model, not so much as being the best player in the academy, but just what you can achieve with a bit of hard work.”
