Currently plying his trade with Premier League team Brighton & Hove Albion, Welbeck was a product of the youth academy at Manchester United FC. Spotted as a six-year-old, we take a look at some of the plaudits given, and the best quotes about Danny Welbeck.
Born in Manchester to Ghanaian parents, Welbeck worked his way up to the Red Devils first team, and competed in seven seasons at Old Trafford.
Playing primarily as a forward, he is seen as a strong player with pace, and good heading abilities, and his appearances in the 2012/13 season helped the club to win the Premier League.
His goal-scoring strike rate improved when he signed up with fellow Premiership rivals Arsenal, with a hat-trick in a Champions League game, and the winning goal against his former Mancunian team, on route to the London club winning the FA Cup in 2015.
Having just recently helped his present team Brighton to their highest ever finish in the top flight of the league with ninth place in the table, Welbeck can also boast a stellar career with the England youth squads with 36 internationals for five different age groups, and 11 goals.
His strike rate with the senior national team was also considerably better than his domestic performances with 16 goals in only 42 matches. Having made his debut in 2011, he was a regular in the team between 2012 and 2014, netting an impressive 13 times. Welbeck made two World Cup finals appearances and one European Championship.
He had actually made his international debut against Ghana, the team who were looking to have him play for their national side due to his parentage.
“Danny has demonstrated what is expected of a top professional from the moment he arrived here…..He is a brilliant role model to have around the place.”
Graham Potter (Brighton & Hove Albion head coach)
“We know how good he is and I said that many times…..He surprises some people but he has power, he has pace, he is finishing well now and I believe he is a team player as well…..He likes to help the team and for a striker, that’s an outstanding quality as well.”
Arsene Wenger (Arsenal manager)
“He’s got a smooth and languid style…..he is a really hard worker. He has good all-round technique. He’s strong, quick, good defensively as well as going forward, and he’s a real leader…..”
Paul McGuinness (under-18 football coach)
“We see Danny as one of the great young players who has emerged from the academy…..He will have a terrific career.”
Alex Ferguson (Manchester United manager)
“Sometimes you need a player that can make the difference and Danny Welbeck is a player that can make the difference – it’s as simple as that…..he has quality…..He is one of our best players, he has fantastic experience.”
Graham Potter (Brighton & Hove Albion manager)
“Arsenal have had Kanu in the past and now have Emmanuel Adebayor and I think Danny Welbeck has the kind of game to replicate what they’ve given the Gunners…..He has the ability to drag the ball past defenders. He has a languid style and you might think, at first look, that he is not quick. But, believe me, he is…..”
Arthur Albiston (former Manchester United defender)
“…..he’s a young player with a lot of potential.”
Darren Ferguson (Preston North End manager)
“Danny is still only 20 years of age and the lad has a great future…..He has always had ability…..he became a man. He has grown up.”
“Welbeck has pace, awareness, heading ability, control and a work ethic…..”
David Pleat (former Tottenham Hotspur manager)
“He’s got an undoubted pedigree, and he is quick and technically very good. He will add to our attacking threat and we are thrilled to add another player of his experience and quality.”
“…..Danny is a really smooth mover, is confident on the ball and has great control…..He can beat defenders using either foot and has a very nice unflustered temperament.”
“He’s an important player who contributes. He doesn’t just score goals but contributes to team work too, he’s a team player. Technically he has improved a lot when you look at him now. Technically he is much more mature and composed in front of goal. The quality of his runs are also better.”
