Another promising teenager signed by Manchester United in 2014 for a world record fee for an 18-year-old, Shaw has developed himself into a compact left-back for both club and the England national team. Still around mid-way through his career, we take a look at some of the best quotes on Luke Shaw.
Starting his career as a youth with Southampton FC, interest was already being shown by some of the big Premier League clubs when he was aged just 16.
As the club’s youngest player to start a game in the Premier League, the lure of Manchester United FC came its way in the summer of 2014, and Shaw moved to Old Trafford for a sum of around £30 million. He became a regular in the team from the 2018/19 season.
He represented the England national team for the first time in early 2014, and his proudest moment with the side came in the final of Euro 2020 when he scored the fastest ever goal in the competition’s deciding game, in 1 minute and 56 seconds. England eventually lost the game to Italy on a penalty shoot-out.
Quite remarkable, as Shaw has only scored two league goals in his career in over 200 matches. As a defender, he has been noted for his attacking play, even being compared to another Southampton product Gareth Bale. The former England international Trevor Brooking has even praised his technical ability as the FA’s director of football development.
“…..technically very gifted.” Trevor Brooking (FA director of football development)
“We always use Luke as a reference when motivating the kids…..Luke inspires our young players…..We are so proud and thrilled by his success on the pitch.” Robbie Ablett (youth coach at former club Molesey Juniors FC)
“…..aspiration, perseverance and respect…..Luke has personified all of these…..his success comes from these values and teamwork.” Lynn Williams (head teacher at player’s former primary school Chandlers Field School)
“…..well-rounded sportsman, sociable and a natural team leader…..so surreal to see him go on and achieve so much. He’s a grounded person and a local lad.” John McKee (teacher at school)
“His talent on the pitch always stood out. He was skilful, super-speedy and had a mature attitude to football – he was a model sportsman…..He’s a shining example of what you can achieve if you work hard.” Heidi Stone (assistant principal at former school Rydens Enterprise)
“Luke is a very talented young left-back with great potential…..He has developed immensely during his time at Southampton and has all the attributes to become a top player.” Ryan Giggs (Manchester United assistant manager)
“…..a 19-year-old kid – a good player, fantastic player.” Jose Mourinho (Chelsea manager)

“I think Luke is an outstanding talent…..I don’t think I’ve seen him play badly in all the games I’ve seen of him. For a 17-year-old playing at that standard that’s quite impressive.” Stuart Pearce (England Under-21 manager)
“Luke Shaw is playing better and better and better.” Jose Mourinho (after Euro 2020 quarter-final win versus Ukraine)
