With a longevity of 24 years as a professional, Sheringham was one of the stalwarts of English football in the ’90s, and of the Premier League. As one of the highest goalscorers in the history of the English Premiership, we take a look at the plaudits and some of the top quotes on Teddy Sheringham.
Starting his career with Millwall, and leaving as the club’s leading goal scorer, Sheringham brought his shooting abilities to Nottingham Forest, Tottenham Hotspur, and Manchester United.
He was the scorer of one of the first ever goals in the new Premier League competition in 1992, and after 15 stellar seasons in the top flight left with one of the league’s all-time records of 146 goals.
Sheringham was seen as an all-round forward and sometimes as a second striker. His memorable goal against Bayern Munich in the dying stages of the 1999 Champions League final coming on as a substitute will linger long in the memories of the faithful at Old Trafford.
His main successes came with Manchester United, with three Premier League, one Champions League, and one FA Cup triumph, even though he spent only four seasons with the club. His long playing career also enabled him to become the oldest goal scorer in the Premier League, as well as the oldest outfield footballer to play in the division.
In all, there were over 750 league appearances for various teams with nearly 300 goals, as well as 51 international caps for the England national team.
