Azpilicueta wants agreement honoured

Chelsea captain César Azpilicueta wants the club’s prospective new owner Todd Boehly to honour an agreement made when Roman Abramovich owned the club.

The Spanish defender’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season but, because he has made more than a stipulated number of appearances, an automatic extension has been triggered which will keep him at Stamford Bridge for a further year.

However, there was an unwritten understanding that, instead, he would be allowed to leave on a free transfer.

Barcelona are understood to have already agreed a two-year deal with the full-back, with an option for a third, giving him greater security than what is available at Stamford Bridge.

Barcelona have already agreed to sign Andreas Christensen on a free transfer and are also being linked with Marcos Alonso, and there have been suggestions that Sergio Dest may be heading the other way.
