A tough and hard-working footballer, Leslie Mark Hughes epitomised the style of the Manchester United team during his time with them. Praised by many who knew him, we take a look at some of the top quotes about Mark Hughes.
The current manager of English football league side Bradford City, Hughes was a 13-year veteran at Premier league team Manchester United. Having joined the Old Trafford club when still in the old style First Division, he went on to claim two Premier League honours in his final years there.
He was one of the big names in the 80s who tried his skills overseas, joining the England striker Gary Lineker at Spanish side Barcelona, under the management of Terry Venables. Born in Wales, he also tried his luck in Germany with Bayern Munich, but both stints away from home were very short and unfruitful.
Luckily for him, Alex Ferguson had taken over the reins at Manchester United and he signed up the striker in 1988, only two years after he had left. Hughes was a regular goal scorer for the Red Devils, and was noted for his dedication and work-rate.
He was the hero when United won the European Cup Winners’ Cup for the first time in 1991, with two quick goals in the second half against the mighty Barcelona. Despite successes in other competitions, all his hard work finally paid off big time with the club when United became the first English side to win the inaugural Premier league title in 1993. Hughes was the top goalscorer for the team in that campaign.
He had spells with Chelsea, Everton, and Blackburn Rovers before becoming a high-profile manager, coaching teams such as Wales, Manchester City, QPR, and Southampton. Hughes was an instant hit with the Wales national team scoring in just 17 minutes on his debut against England!
