One of the first things that Todd Boehly intends to do when his takeover of Chelsea is finally approved is to give goalkeeper Édouard Mendy a pay-rise.
The 30-year old is among the lowest earners in the first-team squad at Stamford Bridge, earning around £52,000 a week, and, on current form, he is more deserving of a higher salary than most members of Thomas Tuchel’s team.
Romelu Lukaku, the club’s record signing, is receiving £350,000 a week mainly to keep the bench warm during matches.
Mendy has proved to be a shrewd signing since joining the club from Rennes in 2020, keeping 46 clean sheets in 89 games, and helping them win the Champions League in his first season at the club.
So good has been his form that Chelsea are prepared to let Kepa Arrizabalaga, still the most expensive goalkeeper in the world. Leave the club this summer.
