Romelu Lukaku is set to stay at Chelsea next season.
The club’s record signing has had a very disappointing first year back in English football and has found himself relegated to the bench in recent months.
An interview that he gave with an Italian TV station in January in which he appeared to regret his move from Inter Milan last summer drove a large wedge between the Belgian international and the club’s fan base.
That has sparked inevitable speculation that club and player could be set to part ways this summer, bit now his manager Thomas Tuchel has sought to downplay such talk, insisting “right now he is an important part of the squad next season”.
The German has defended his current batch of strikers saying that it is normal for them sometimes to have issues with self-confidence, although it will have escaped nobody’s notice that former player Tammy Abraham appears to having no such issues at Roma.
Lukaku did fin the net twice against Wolves on Saturday, but his team slipped to a disappointing draw instead of prospective new owner Todd Boehly.
