Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny is open to the idea of staying at Arsenal.
The Egyptian international will be out of contract at the end of the season, and can leave the club as a free agent, but is prepared to sign a new deal if offered one, even if there are no guarantees of regular first-team football attached.
He made his first appearance since December in the win over Chelsea last week, and kept his place for Saturday’s match against Manchester United.
Elneny says “ If Arsenal say ‘we want you’ I don’t think about leaving. It’s my family for six years. I love this club.”
It had widely been expected that Arsenal were ready to move on from the 29-year-ol;d who is one of the survivors from the Arsène Wenger era, but his recent performances have given pause for thought.
Keeping him around for a while younger means that Mikel Arteta always has a reliable back-up option available, even if he is not a starter when everybody is fit.
Andy is an exiled English football fan living in Cyprus. He loves all sports but football is his abiding passion, and he still has dreams every now and then about scoring the winning goal in a Wembley Cup Final, even though his playing days are long gone. He follows most major leagues, across Europe at least, and has a favoured team in each. When he’s not watching, listening, reading or downloading podcasts about football, he spend his time worrying about his beloved Arsenal.
