It has been virtually confirmed that Mikel Arteta will stay with Arsenal, irrespective of where the club finishes in the league.
A few weeks ago the Spaniard appeared in line for a bumper new contract, with the club closing in on a Champions League place.
Three successive defeats had dented those hopes and left some fans once again to question his suitability for the job, although the win at Chelsea will have silenced some of his critics for a while..
But the news that the Gunners are about to conduct a “top to bottom” cultural review of the club is the clearest indication yet that Arteta will be staying in post. He is regarded as one of the key sponsors of the project, along with Technical Director Edu, and manager of the Arsenal academy Per Mertesacker. All three are former players at the club.
Called ‘The Arsenal Way” the project aims to hear views from staff at all levels of the organisation to identify problems, with an internal feeling that the club has declined since the latter stage of Arsène Wenger’s time at the club.
