They were again associated with him in the last transfer window, but Sevilla, who are chasing the Spanish league title, did not want to lose him in the middle of the summer.
But the Stamford Bridge side have not lost interest and, with defence a number one priority area for them in the next transfer window, they are determined this time to get their man.
And, even if they cannot get Seville to compromise on price, indications are that this time they are prepared to trigger his release clause.
