Barcelona are hoping to reach an agreement with Chelsea captain César Azpilicueta in the coming days.
The 32-year old is in the last five months of his current contract in West London, meaning that he is free to talk with foreign club and, if necessary, sign a pre-contract agreement with them.
Azpilicueta has previously spoken of his desire to stay with the West London club, but that desire looks likely to be thwarted by the club policy, which states that players over 30 will only be offered one year contract extensions.
The Spaniard is looking for three years and is an age where he is looking for greater security for his family.
And with the prospect of earning a healthy signing-on fee into the bargain, it seems now that the career of the longest serving player at Stamford Bridge is drawing to an end, until Chelsea have a sudden change of heart.
