Newcastle United are pushing to sign Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah before deadline day.
He is one of a trio of transfers the North-East club are trying to get over the line before the window shuts, the others being midfielder Bruno Guimaraes of Lyon, and Brighton defender Dan Burn.
The 22-year old, the record goalscorer for England at under-21 level. is in the final six months of his current contract at the Emirates, and has turned down the offer of a new deal because he wants regular football.
If Nketiah is allowed to go, it increases the need even further for Arsenal to sign another striker. With Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang also expected to leave in the next few days, and Flo Balogun having left on loan with Middlesbrough, that would leave Alexander Lacazette, a man who has cored three goals all season as the only recognised senior forward at the club.
