Thiago Silva has signed a one-year contract extension with Chelsea.
The veteran Brazilian joined the club from PSG in 2020 on a free transfer on an initial one-year deal, but the extension means s that he will be continuing his stay in West London into a third year.
He told the club’s website” To play here with Chelsea is a real pleasure. I never thought I would play for three years here in this great club, so I’m very happy to stay for another season”.
His signature solves one of Chelsea’s defensive dilemmas, with Antonio Rüdiger, Andreas Christensen and Cesar Azpilicueta also heading into the last six months of their current deals at Stamford Bridge. There are hopes that both Christensen and Azpilicueta will also sign new deals, but Rüdiger seems set to leave at the end of the season.
Despite his comparative age, Silva has not only helped Chelsea win the Champions League, but his experience and calmness has helped bring a sense of order and leadership to Chelsea’s back line.
