Striker Ollie Watkins, apparently a target for Arsenal in the January transfer window, was left out of the Aston Villa team to play Brentford on Sunday.
And manager Steven Gerrard was non-committal when asked by reporters about his future at the club after missing the game against his former club.
Watkins has been linked with a move to toe Gunners for some time, and ah gone public about his desire to play for the North London club.
A new striker is top of the shopping list for the North London side, with both Alexander Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah both out of contract in the summer, and having turned down new deals.
And the striker situation has been exacerbated with the club’s top earner and former captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang considered unlikely to play for the club again after his disciplinary breaches.
The England striker is under contract at Villa Park until 2025.
