Chelsea’s attempts to recall Emerson Palmieri from his loan spell with Lyon have been vetoed by the French club.
The Blues were considering bring the Italian international back to Stamford Bridge to cover for ben Chilwell, who will now miss the rest of the season after it was decided he needs knee surgery.
Palmieri joined Chelsea in 2018 from Serie A side Roma but has struggled to ever establish himself at Stamford Bridge, making just 71 appearances in all competitions spread over five seasons.
He joined Lyon on loan in August for the season, and has already played for them 12 times, scoring one goal.
His contract expires at the end of the season and there are no indications he will be offered a new deal, meaning he is now unlikely to ever wear a Chelsea shirt again.
