Chelsea are eyeing a move for Everton left-back Lucas Digne in January.
It follows news that England international Ben Chilwell needs knee surgery and may be out of action for the rest of the season.
Chilwell had begun the season out of favour but had worked his way back into the side and was playing well, having scored three goals in six games when he picked up the injury in the Champions League win over Juventus.
Initially it was hoped that rest could solve the problem, but now it looks like surgery is the only recourse available.
In his absence, Marcos Alonso has struggled defensively.
Meanwhile, at Everton. Digne’s relationship with Rafa Benitez has deteriorated to the extent that the pair almost came to blows, and they have already signed a replacement for him in the form of Ukrainian international Vitaliy Mylolenko, and are willing to let him leave.
