Chelsea may have broken their transfer record to sign Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan.
However, he was not their original main target as the man to lead their line season, with Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland top of their wish list at the start of the summer.
Any hopes of making a deal for the Norwegian international though transpired when his agent revealed the personal terms he was demanding.
Represented by super-agent Mino Raiola, the player apparently wanted £920, 000 a week wages, which would have broken the Chelsea wage structure right open, and would have been a Premier League record by a considerable margin.
Raiola also wanted an agent’s fee of £34 million, and, on top of that, demanded a separate salary for himself, taking the total cost of the package of around the £275 million mark.
Even for a club with such deep pockets as Chelsea, that was deemed excessive, and they switched their attention to Lukaku instead.
