Atlético Madrid’s Kieran Trippier is wanted by Arsenal as they look to solve their problem area of right-back.
But the Spanish side will only do business if the Gunners are willing to let either Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang or Alexander Lacazette move in the opposite direction.
And Trippier himself favours a move to Manchester United, but they have been deterred from making a move because of their insistence that they must trigger his £34 million release clause.
Lacazette has been linked with Atlético on a number of occasions in the past, and the Gunners are open to offers for the Frenchman, who is in the last year of his current deal at the Emirates.
Arteta wants to keep Aubameyang, the club’s highest paid player, although he did wonder recently whether the Gabonese striker could rediscover his scoring form after an indifferent campaign last year.
Trippier has not started either of Atlético’s first two games of the season, although Diego Simeone insists he remains an integral part of his squad.
