But it also means that he is likely to leave them for free for a second time next summer unless they can get him to change his mind about a new deal.
PSG were thought to be interested in signing him, but with the arrival of Lionel Messi in Paris, any thoughts of making a deal for Pogba during the current window re now over. The French club already have the biggest wage bill of any sporting side in the world, and even they have a limit.
However, they will continue to monitor his situation and could make a move for him next June when they know there will be no transfer fee involved.
Pogba could sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club in January.
Given his situation, United may be willing to lower their asking price for him even further so to avoid losing him on a free.
