United have reached agreement with Real Madrid over the transfer of central defender Raphael Varane.
The fee is believed to be £41 million which includes add-ons and bonuses.
The deal will be finalised once the player successfully completes his medical.
It ends United’s long search for a quality right-sided partner to Harry Maguire in the centre of their defence, and is their second major signing of the summer following the arrival of Jadon Sancho for £73 million.
A World Cup winner with France, Varane, who has 79 international caps, is regarded as one of the finest central defenders in the world.
Entering the fianl year of his contract with the Spanish club and unable to agree terms on a new deal, Real decided to sell him now rather than risk losing him on a free transfer at the end of the season.
He began his career in Ligue I with Lens before joining Real in the summer of 2011.
