Arsenal defender William Saliba is set to join Marseille on loan for the coming season.
Signed from Saint Étienne as an 18-year old two years ago in a £27 million deal, Saliba has never played a senior game for he Gunners. Instead, he was loaned back to Saint Étienne for the first season and, after spending the first half of the last campaign unused in Mikel Arteta’s squad, he was loaned again, this time for Nice.
He was subsequently named in the Ligue 1 team of the season and many Arsenal fans were hoping he would be given his chance in tee campaign ahead.
However, with the Gunners continuing to be heavily linked with a move for Brighton’s Ben White, yet again the player appears surplus to requirements at the Emirates.
Saliba was originally named in France’s squad for the Tokyo Olympics, but has now withdrawn, facilitating the timing of his latest loan move.
