Former goalkeeper set for United return

Former goalkeeper Tom Heaton is being lined-up for a return to Manchester United and Old Trafford.

Heaton began his career with United, although he never played a senior game for them.

Instead, he embarked on a series of loan moves to clubs such as Swindon Town, Cardiff City, Rochdale and QPR, before joining Cardiff permanently on a free transfer.

He then moved to Bristol City, before joining Burnley, where he enjoyed his greatest success, playing 200 games for the Clarets and winning three England caps.

He joined Aston Villa after losing his place to Nick Pope, but has had to make do with a back-up role at Villa Park this season to first choice Emi Martinez. He is available on a free transfer.

United are in the market for a third choice keeper behind Dean Henderson and David de Gea. Lee Grant has not been offered a new deal but may be offered a coaching role, whilst Sergio Romero seems certain to leave the club.
