Liverpool sign Preston defender

Liverpool signed Preston defender Ben Davies for £2 million on transfer deadline day to help solve their defensive crisis.

Having spent nearly all January insisting that the club did not need to bring in anybody to replace long-term absentees Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomes, Jurgen Klopp was forced into a last minute U-turn when Joel Matip picked up an ankle injury ion the Premier League against Spurs last Thursday. It has now been confirmed he will miss the rest of the season.

With Fabinho also ruled out with a muscle problem the duo of Jordan Henderson and Nathanial Phillips that took to the field against West Hm on Sunday was their 12th different centre-back pairing of the season so far.

25-year-old Davies is a product of the Preston academy and has enjoyed loan spells previously with York, Southport, and Newport County.

He played the full 90 minutes for Preston on Saturday ion their defeat to Sheffield Wednesday.
