Liverpool may be forced into defensive signing

Having insisted through January that he does not expect Liverpool to sign a defender, Jurgen Klopp may need to have a last minute change of mind.

Already without Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez who are out with long-term injuries, they have also now lost Joel Matip.

The Cameroonian was forced off at half-time in the Premier League win over Spurs with an ankle injury, which was later diagnosed as potentially serious.

It meant, that with defensive midfielder Fabinho, who has been operating as a makeshift centre=half, missing the game with a minor muscle problem, the league champions finished the game with a defensive pairing of Jordan Henderson and Nathaniel Phillips.

They also have 19-year-old Rhys Williams available but his confidence has been undermined after he made several mistakes in the FA Cup defeat by Manchester United last weekend.

Despite their injury woes, Liverpool ended their run of recent poor results with a 3 -1  win.
