Nuno Mendes from Sporting Lisbon is the latest defender beng linked with a move to Liverpool as their injury crisis deepens.
James Milner was the latest player to head to the tratement room after Satursday’s game at broadcaster, causing his manager Jurgen Klopp to fire a broadside at the broadcaster BT Sports over the scheduling of the game.
Mendes, who is under contact at Sporting is highly rated by the Portuguese side, and they are keen to tie him down to a lucrative new long-term deal.
However, he is concerned that his release clause, which is already set at €40 million, could be increased to such a level that would price him out of a move to the Premier League. Asa result, he has refused to open negotiations with the Portuguese club over new terms.
Liverpool have already signed a back-up to Any Robertson in the form of Kostas Tsemikas whojoined the club from Olympiakos in the summer.
