An injury picked up by Liverpool defender Joe Gomes on international duty could force Liverpool in the transfer duty.
Gomes was prepared for England’s clash with the Republic of Ireland on Thursday night when the injury occurred, although no other player was involved.
He has returned to his club for further tests and scans, and now they have said that he will be out for some significant time, adding to Liverpool’s problems in central defence.
They have already lost Virgil van Dijk for the rest of the season, leaving Joel Matip as their only fit senior centre-half. Fabinho can play there, but he is also currently injured.
Youngsters Nathaniel Phillips and Rhys Williams have also featured there for the Premier League champions this season, but they lack experience at top level; and it would be a big risk for Jurgen Klopp to rely on them.
