Lionel Messi will need to take a pay cut if he wants to stary at Barcelona.
And that news will be music to the ears of Manchester City who are hoping to entice the Argentine to swap the No Camp for the Etihad.
The Spanish club are heavily in the red, with current debts estimated at over £700 million. They have already announced that at least five members of their current squad will be sold in January to raise funds, but that will not be enough, and salary cuts are very much the order o the day. And that extends to Messi, their captain and talisman.
Already Toni Freixa, one of the leading candidates to succeed as President of the club has warned that if Messi wants a new deal with the Catalans 0- his current contract expires next summer – he cannot expect it to be on the same terms as he is getting now.
And that may just be the bargaining chip that City need to convince the 33-year-old to agree to sign for them.
