United are considering a summer move which might reunite Bruno Fernandes with former Sporting Lisbon teammate Nuno Mendes.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to strengthen his squad and give Luke Shaw serious competition for the left-back slot, and they have identified 18-year old Mendes as a credible option.
Mendes’ contract currently has a €45 million (£41 million release clause) but there are suggestions that Sporting may be prepared to reduce their valuation of the player, because of the need to raise funds in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Mendes is also being tracked by both Liverpool and Juventus, even though he has only broken into the Sporting first team since the resumption of the Portuguese league.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes that Shaw needs to face more pressure for his place, and that the left-back has failed to live up to his promise during his time at Manchester United since signing from Southampton in 2014.
