Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho is hopeful that he can convince Eric Dier to sign a new deal at the club.
The England international’s current contract expires at the end of next season, but the Portuguese wants the 26-year-old to extend his stay in North London, rather than allow this deal to run down.
Since the resumption of the league campaign Mourinho has played Dier in his favoured position of centre-back, rather than in defensive midfield, where he was often deployed by Mauricio Pochettino.
Since joining from Sporting Lisbon in 2014 in a £4 million deal, Dier has made 172 league appearances for Tottenham, scoring 10 goals.
Mourinho is also confident that no further action will be taken against Dier by the FA after the incident following the FA Cup defeat to Norwich in March. That saw him climb into the stand to confront a fan who was abusing his brother.
