Soares gets permanent Arsenal deal

He has never worn an Arsenal shirt in anger, despite joining the club on loan nearly five months ago..

However, Cédric Soares has been given a four year deal by the Gunners, along with fellow defender Pablo Mari. The club have also announced – much to the dismay of some of their fans – that David Luiz has also been given a new one year contract.

Soares was signed on loan from Southampton on transfer deadline day in January, but arrived at the club on crutches, having picked up a knee injury at St. Mary’s. That cleared up during the lockdown, but he has not featured since the resumption o the season, after sustaining a facial injury in training, forcing him to wear a protective mask.

With his deal due to end on June 30th, and Soares available on a free transfer, many expected the Portuguese international to leave the club without ever having played for them but, in  a surprise move, he has now been given a four year contract.

Edu, Arsenal’s Director of Football said “Cedric is also going to be an important player. He has been unlucky with the injuries but he is close to being ready and gives us more strength in the right-back position.
