They have already agreed to spend £54 million on Timo Werner and £37 million on Ajax winger Hakim Ziyech, but Chelsea’s spending spree may not be over.
Now they have emerged as one of the favourites to sign Flamengo star Gérson, with Borussia Dortmund and Spurs also in the hunt for the 23 year old.
Last week he was the subject of a £16 million bid by an unnamed club – believed to be Tottenham – but that was turned down with Flamengo holding out for close to double that sum. And that may give Chelsea the chance to step in because their spending power is considerably more than their London rivals.
Gérson has been linked with Arsenal in the past, but instead chose to sign for Roma, where he failed to impress and was lent out to Fiorentina. He was bought back by Flamengo last summer, but now he is ready for another crack in Europe and aims to succeed this time.
