Chelsea are leading the race to sign teenage Dutch defender Xavier Mbuyamba who has drawn favourable comparisons with a young Virgil van Dyck.
The 18 year old joined the Barcelona youth system from MVV Maastricht last summer but is already looking to move on because of the lack of first team opportunities at the Nou Camp.
A host of top clubs in Europe are interested in acquiring his services, including Real Madrid, Juventus, and Inter Milan, but Chelsea have emerged as the favourites are delivering an excellent presentation to the player and his agent, who said “the club has outlined a very ambitious plan for Xavier”.
Chelsea are regarded as an attractive proposition because of their perceived willingness to give youth a chance, with hopes that Mbuyamba could become a first-team player within two years.
His agent Carlos Barros has also lamented the ambiguities at Barcelona with club elections looming, and asked how any young player at the club can get a chance when even a talent like Ansu Fatu is allowed to leave on loan.
