Chelsea are set to battle Arsenal for the signature of the German World Cup winner Jérôme Boateng.
The former international was almost sold by Bayern Munich in January, with Arsenal reportedly close to landing a deal for him, but an injury crisis meant that he ended up staying at the Allianz Arena with the German champions. However, there is no speculation again that he could be allowed to leave in the summer, with just one year left on his current deal.
Arsenal are still in the market for defensive reinforcements, with the likes of Shkodran Mustafi md Sokratis Papasthathopoulos potential summer departures from the Emirates, whilst Chelsea are also looking to bolster their defence. Frank Lampard’s penchant for playing a back five is well suited to Boateng’s strengths, and ability to play out from the back.
Boateng made headlines in Germany for the wrong reasons last week, when he was fined by his club from breaking government lockdown rules. He was driving to see his sick son when his car skidded on a snowy road and hit a motorway crash barrier.
