It already ranks as one of the worst transfers of recent seasons.
However, the cost to Manchester United of Chilean forward Alexis Sanchez is about to get worse, after it emerged that he is due a £1.1 million loyalty bonus when he returns to them at the end of the season.
The ex-Arsenal player has been on loan with Inter Milan this season, but his time in Italy has not gone well, and he has scored just one goal in 15 appearances for them, and missed a significant chunk of the action through injury.
The Serie A side had the option to sign him full-time, but Antonio Conté has not seen anything to convince him to make a deal, so Sanchez is likely to head back to Old Trafford.
And that will trigger the bonus payment which was included in the original terms he signed when moving from the Gunners in January 2018.
Inter have been paying half of Sanchez’s wages of £375,000 a week, but now United are set to bear the whole burden of that again as well.
