Liverpool have been boosted by the news that the two men responsible more than any others for their recent success are ready to sign new deals with the club.
Goalkeeper Alisson Becker arrived from Roma for £67 million in the summer of 2018, and has established himself as the best shot stopper in the league. Currently sidelined by a hip injury, his importance to the team was highlighted in his absence by the performance of his deputy, Adrian, in their Champions League defeat, who made several high profile errors which partly cost his side the tie.
Alisson is already under contract until 2024, but now the club want to reward him with an extension.
If anything, Virgil van Dijk’s contribution to Liverpool’s sparkling form over the past two years has been even greater, since his arrival in January 2018, for a world record fee for a defender at the time of £75 million. He, too, already has a long-term contract at Anfield, until 2023, but is expected to follow Alisson and agree to a longer stay on Merseyside.
