Liverpool are set to offer European footballer of the year Virgil van Dijk a new contract, worth £150,000 a week.
Since moving to Anfield from Southampton in January 2018, he has transformed the Liverpool defence, helping them win the Champions League and making them odds-on favourite to win the Premier League this season. Now the club are keen to reward him and, at the same time, fend of interest from the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Juventus for making a bid for his services.
Van Dijk, the PFA Players’ Player of the Year last season, is already under contract with the club until 2023, but the new deal, worth £50 million in total, will extend his stay on Merseyside for a further two years.
In addition to the new deal, it has also been reported that van Dijk and the rest of his Liverpool team mates will share a bonus of more than £4 million if – and when – they end Liverpool’s 30 year wait for the league title.
