Chelsea are making a late bid to sign Dries Mertens from Napoli before the transfer market opens.
The 32 year old Belgian international is out o contract with the Serie A side, is highly versatile, and can play either through the middle or on the right.
The West London club are in the market for a new striker, with Tammy Abraham struggling with injury, whilst Olivier Giroud may still leave the club before the transfer window shuts on Friday night.
They have been linked with a move for Edison Cavani, but the Uruguay striker looks likely to move to his preferred destination of Atlético Madrid. Meanwhile, other targets like Jadon Sancho or Timo Werner of Red Bull Leipzig may not become available until the summer.
That makes Mertens an attractive immediate alternative but when Napoli will be willing to let him leave this late in the window, leaving them no time to find an alternative is open to question, with the Champions League starting again in a few weeks’ time, and with Napoli needing to climb the Serie A table.
