United close to key appointment

Manchester United are close to finally appointing a Director of Football, with Luis Campos being lined up for the position.

The 55 year old Portuguese is currently working at French club Lille.

He previously worked at Monaco and is widely credited with having developed the likes of Kylian Mbappé, Fabinho, Bernardo Silva, and Anthony Martial at the Monegasque club, and bringing through Nicolas Pépé at Lille, before his summer switch to Arsenal.

Woodward wants to shift United’s transfer policy away from signing expensive, ready-made stars in favour of cheaper, emerging talent, and believes Campos is the man who can spearhead the change of approach.

Campos was previously linked with the role when Jose Mourinho was manager at the club. At that time, however, it was not thought prudent to offer him the job because, having another Portuguese in charge of the club’s transfer policy, would have given Mourinho too much power.
