Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho has personally spoken to Manchester City full-back João Cancelo about a switch from the Etihad to White Hart Lane.
The Portuguese international only joined City last summer from Juventus in a £60 million deal, but has struggled to make an impression under Pep Guardiola, with Kyle Walker often preferred ahead of him at right-back.
He has started 13 times for his new club, including last weekend’s 6 – 1 thrashing of Aston Villa, but is keen for more minutes, and is believed to be amenable to a move to Spurs, and a chance to play under his compatriot.
Barcelona are also interested in a player who would cost around £51 million.
Right-back is a position that Spurs have identified as a problem area, and they have been linked with a number of players, including Max Aarons who plays for Norwich City, and West Brom teenager Nathan Ferguson.
