Manager Jurgen Klopp has said that the reason there are no French players in his squad is because they are too expensive.
The newly crowned Club World Cup Champions are one of several clubs linked with a move for PSG forward Kylian Mbappé. However, Klopp appears to have scotched those rumours with his comments, saying that the club could not afford him.
The German, referencing the £89 million that Manchester United paid Juventus to sign Paul Pogba, or the £108 million forked out by Barcelona to Atlético Madrid this summer for Antoine Griezmann said “We would like to have a French player, but some of them are too expensive for us.”
Mbappé who is also a target for Real Madrid would likely cost somewhere in the region of £180 million. He has refused to sign a new deal with the Paris club and is eyeing a move to La Liga instead.
The last French international to play for Liverpool was Mamadou Sakho, although their under-23 side does have a French left-back in the shape of Yasser Larouci.
