Another Tottenham defender previously linked with a move away from the club, Toby Alderweireld, could now be prepared to stay, now that Jose Mourinho has taken over the reins at White Hart Lane.
The 30 year old was amongst those who wanted to leave the side under Mauricio Pochettino, but with the arrival of Mourinho, Alderweireld is ready to reconsider his position. The Portuguese has long been an admirer of the Belgian international, and even tried to sign him when he was in charge of Manchester United.
One of the reasons that Mourinho wanted to take the job, he said, was to work with their talented squad, and, even if he can persuade most of those players linked with an exit from the club to stay, then he will save the side considerable money in terms of transfer fees.
It comes as news that Alderweireld’s international team mate Jan Vertonghen, another player long linked with a move away from the club, is also open to signing a contract extension.
