Danny Drinkwater’s loan spell with Burnley is likely to be terminated in January, with the player set for a return to Chelsea.
The Lancashire club have the option to extend his stay with them, but, given that would require them to meet his full weekly wage of £120,000 that is a highly unlikely outcome for a player who has barely featured for them.
The former England international has made just one appearance for them in the Carabao Cup, after injuring in a brawl outside a nightclub in September, following an altercation with fellow footballer Kgosi Ntlhe.
It is another setback for a player who was part of the Leicester City team that won the Premier League, but who has played just 23 times since leaving them in 2017.
Burnley meanwhile are looking for alternatives to Drinkwater, with manager Sean Dyche saying “We weren’t thinking it was going to transpire as it has done.
“That leaves it in a different place than it could have been if he’d been fit and well.”
