Manchester United want to hijack Liverpool’s attempts to sign RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner.
The 23 year old who already has 28 full international caps for Germany, has been a long-time target for the Anfield club who have earmarked a move for him next summer.
However, United want to pre-empt them by bidding for him in January, having had scouts watch every match he has played this season. They believe that the player has the age profile and ability that they are seeking, and which will enable him to develop into a top-class talent.
Werner is under contract at Leipzig until 2022, but he has a buy-out clause of only £27 million, negotiated when he failed to secure a transfer to Bayern Munich in the summer. That makes him value for money in the current transfer market.
Werner scored a hat-trick for Leipzig on Saturday night as they thrashed Mainz 05 8 – 0 to go third in the Bundesliga.
